Yard & Leaf Waste
Between May 1st and 26th 2017, leaves and yard waste will be picked up in built-up areas (including Belmont, Eastwood, Lynhurst, Norman/Lyndale, Port Stanley, Sparta, and Union) on regular garbage days. The waste needs to be put in brown kraft bags, and set on the curb by 7 AM. It will be picked up by a separate vehicle.
The Municipality no longer accepts grass clippings as regular garbage, regardless of whether a garbage tag is attached. Outside of special collections, Central Elgin residents can take their waste to the St. Thomas Community Recycling Centre (CRC) located at 330 South Edgeware Road in St. Thomas. Rural Central Elgin residents must take their leaf and yard waste to this location. Leaf and yard waste will no longer be accepted at White's Station Operation Centre, 42343 Fruit Ridge Line. The complete brochure outlining acceptable materials and hours of operation for the CRC can be found here.
Burning of Leaves not Permitted in Built Up Areas
Residents are reminded that the open burning of leaves in built up areas is not permitted at any time of year. If the Fire Rescue service is called to your property to extinguish the fire, you may be charged $500 for the call. Instead of burning your leaves, place them out for collection in Kraft paper bags as part of Central Elgin’s Spring/Fall Leaf and Yard Waste collection, or start a compost area in your yard.
Earth Machine Composter
Central Elgin is now selling backyard composters, the Earth Machine, at the low cost of $35.00 plus HST. Composters can be purchased at the Central Elgin Municipal Offices in the Elgin County Admin Bldg, 450 Sunset Drive.
Central Elgin is receiving special pricing on the composters through the City of London because of our partnership in London recycling facility. The Earth Machine has a retail value of approximately $100.
